Anglozine Eelpiland

AW/20

This story starts in the late 1950’s on an island in West London, famed for baking Eel Pies. Tasty eels scooped out from the surrounding river Thames water; the exotic name stuck even when the pies stopped. The dilapidated Victorian era hotel revived by latter day saint Mr Arthur Chisnall, he set about setting up a youth club for beatniks and teenage delinquents on the island, from the surrounding mainland drawing in rhythm and blues fans from all over London and the U.K to hear the bands play at Eel Pie Island hotel.

Shot on location in Hackney’s Moth club and the surrounding area, we recreated the rough and ready feel of those early club days, utilising photostat textures in the finished work to reflect the immediacy of a raw zine, extolling the exuberance of digging’ this scene.
